The Sisterhood of Temple Emanuel, Roanoke

What is Temple Emanuel Sisterhood? An organization of women of the Congregation who band together for fellowship and friendship, for programs to benefit the Temple, the community, for social activities, for study, and, above all, for the growth of the individual so that each woman may find an opportunity to fulfill her potential. Sisterhood provides the arena for the individual to expand and grow in a Jewish atmosphere.

Why Sisterhood? Within the structure of the Congregation, Sisterhood is the place where women can meet and work in a group for the Congregation and develop projects in which they are interested and wish to be involved.

Why Do You Need Sisterhood? Sisterhood provides a collective identity for the women of our congregation. In this period of transition and upheaval, women are reinterpreting their role and re-examining their status. They are free to examine and explore within the framework of the Sisterhood because in this way the Sisterhood as well as the individual benefits.

What Does Sisterhood Do? In brief, the answer is anything its members feel would be valuable to them, their families, their congregation and their community. The Temple Emanuel Sisterhood has historically been the backbone of our congregation. Our current Sisterhood is very active in the upkeep of the Temple and its facilities. They sponsor the Passover Seder and the Chanukah Dinner, contribute to the religious school, and are key in maintaining the library. They are also underwriting the cost of the new kitchen for our building renovation! Ongoing activities include monthly meetings, enjoying guest speakers, producing the birthday and anniversary calendar, the rummage sale, running the gift shop, and hosting a donor luncheon. They are always ready to help on special occasions and in any way they can to improve the Temple.
